Key Concepts of Heat Treatment HT Wooden Pallet Fumigation
Fumigation of wooden dunnage involves treating raw wood materials to eliminate insects and their larvae through two methods: heat treatment (HT) or methyl bromide (MB) fumigation.
ISPM 15 International Standard is a regulation set forth by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) concerning non-toxic fumigation methods. For instance, heat treatment does not involve chemicals but utilizes high-temperature kilns operating at 56°C. For chemical fumigation, MB is used in compliance with international safety standards that are non-toxic to humans.
Heat Treatment HT Wooden Pallet Fumigation at Wooden Pallet Vietnam
Heat Treatment Process: Fully assembled wooden pallets are placed in specialized kilns at 56°C for 30 minutes. The moisture content of the pallets is reduced to 25%. Ordinary kilns, which operate at 30°C–50°C, are insufficient for this process. Dedicated HT kilns are required to maintain a stable temperature of 56°C continuously for 30 minutes.
HT Stamp: Pallets from Wooden Pallet Vietnam are stamped with VN-HT 019 to certify that they have undergone fumigation. Additional stamps indicating the date of treatment can be applied for further verification.
Notes: The validity of heat treatment fumigation is 7 days domestically. If the pallets are not exported within this period, MB fumigation can extend the validity up to 21 days.
Recommended Fumigation Methods for Wooden Pallets Meeting Export Standards
Heat Treatment (HT)
Advantages:
Pallets are treated using heat, making the process non-toxic.
Heat-treated pallets achieve a safe moisture level of 20°C–25°C, meeting export standards.
Disadvantages:
Requires a large and regular order quantity or sufficient load to utilize the kiln.
Fixed-location treatment HT kilns cannot be relocated like MB fumigation setups.
Certificates are valid for only 7 days.
Costs are double compared to traditional chemical fumigation.
Methyl Bromide (MB) Fumigation
Advantages:
MB fumigation is versatile, allowing treatment at various locations using portable tarpaulins.
Certificates have a 21-day validity period.
Applicable for any quantity, large or small.
Disadvantages:
The use of chemicals makes MB fumigation non-compliant with the export regulations of certain countries, especially in Europe.
