Termite Prevention by Trench Method

According to construction standards TCXD 7958/2010 (formerly TCVN 204/1998): Protection of construction works – termite prevention for newly built structures.

1. Termite Nest Elimination

• During site leveling, if termite nests are found, excavate to the nest and apply 20–30 liters of 10% PMs-100 solution (or equivalent).

• Remove plant residues such as wood scraps, formwork, and planks.

• If formwork cannot be removed, spray effective termiticide to neutralize food sources and nesting sites.

2. Trench Barriers

• Create vertical barriers by digging trenches around the foundation walls to prevent termite intrusion from surrounding soil.

• Trench dimensions: 50 cm wide, 60–80 cm deep depending on soil type (minimum 80 cm for loose soil).

• Each cubic meter of excavated soil is mixed with 12–14 kg of PMs-100 (or equivalent) before backfilling.

• Line the outer trench wall with nylon before refilling.

• Finish with brick paving or concrete.

3. Indoor Foundation Treatment

• Dig trenches along walls, 30 cm wide, 30–40 cm below finished soil level.

• Mix excavated soil with 10–12 kg/m³ of PMs-100 before backfilling.

• Before pouring concrete, spread PMs-100 at 0.7–1 kg/m², then cover with nylon before applying mortar.

• Spray chlorpyrifos 1% solution at 2 L/m² on wall bases and pile caps.

4. Utility Penetrations

• Water pipes, drainage lines, electrical conduits, and expansion joints must be treated with termiticide at prescribed dosages to maintain barrier continuity.

5. Wooden Components

• Doors, frames, wall panels, and decorative wooden structures must be treated with termiticide after fabrication.

• If cut or modified, apply additional treatment before finishing with paint or varnish.

• Wood preservatives in Vietnam include:

  • Oil-based solvents: suitable for spraying, dipping, or brushing.

  • Water-based solvents: require soaking or vacuum-pressure impregnation.

For termite prevention in construction types B, C, D, Lenfos 50EC may be used at 1.0–1.2% concentration, applying 5 liters/m².
