What is Aluminum Anodizing?
Aluminum anodizing is a plating process that:
- Involves creating colors on aluminum surfaces through an electrochemical method using electrodes and plating solution tanks.
- Produces aluminum products with diverse colors and surface finishes.
- Forms a protective oxide layer on the aluminum, allowing it to be dyed in various colors through light refraction effects.
The Aluminum Nickel-Chromium Plating Process
1. Pre-Treatment
At this stage, the aluminum surface is cleaned to remove dirt, adhesive residue, rust, and other impurities. This ensures better adhesion for the plating process.
Pre-treatment methods include:
- Mechanical Grinding: Using abrasive powders for rough and fine polishing.
- Polishing by Tumbling: Involving both wet and dry polishing to smooth areas inaccessible by grinding.
- Chemical Cleaning: Utilizing organic solvents, alkaline solutions, or electrochemical methods to clean the aluminum surface.
2. Creating the Protective Oxide Layer (Anodizing)
- The process begins with an acid bath, where the aluminum is connected as the anode and the acid bath acts as the cathode.
- Electricity is passed through the bath, causing a reaction between aluminum and the acid, resulting in the formation of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) and the release of hydrogen gas.
- The oxide layer formed is incredibly hard, second only to diamond in durability.
- This layer is porous at the nano level, with tiny, evenly distributed pores across the aluminum surface.
3. Electrolytic Coloring on the Aluminum Surface
- The electrolysis process allows nickel particles to deposit into the pores of the oxide layer, creating the desired color.
- The density of nickel determines the intensity of the color: a denser nickel layer results in deeper colors, and vice versa.
- This step is carried out automatically using a vertical anodizing process at the factory.
Benefits of Aluminum Plating
✔ Increased Hardness: After plating, aluminum’s hardness significantly improves compared to untreated aluminum.
✔ Durable and Aesthetic Finish: Anodized aluminum maintains a bright, luxurious appearance with excellent colorfastness over time.
✔ Enhanced Value: Aluminum plating adds considerable value to the material, contributing to advancements in the aluminum industry.
