1. Surface Treatment
Before powder coating, the surface of the product must be treated to meet the following requirements:
Removal of industrial grease from machining processes
Removal of rust from the surface
Prevention of re-rusting through the application of a zinc phosphate layer
Formation of a zinc layer to enhance adhesion between the coating and the metal surface
Surface treatment is typically performed by immersing the product in chemical baths, including:
Degreasing: Immersion in an NaOH solution to remove grease.
Rinsing: Rinsing with clean water.
Rust Removal: Immersion in an acid bath (H₂SO₄ or HCl) to eliminate rust.
Rinsing: A second clean water rinse.
Surface Conditioning: Immersion in a surface-conditioning chemical bath.
Phosphating: Immersion in a phosphate chemical bath to create a protective layer.
2. Surface Drying
After chemical treatment, the product is dried before coating.
Drying Process: Products are placed in drying ovens designed to remove residual moisture, making them ready for powder coating.
Drying Ovens: Typically cubic, these ovens utilize infrared stoves fueled by gas or electricity. Products are suspended on transport racks for easy handling.
3. Powder Coating
After drying, the product is placed in a spray booth where the powder is applied and excess powder is recovered.
Adhesion Mechanism: Powder coating adheres to the metal surface through electrostatic forces.
Powder Recovery: Excess powder is collected, mixed with new powder, and reused, offering significant cost efficiency.
The spray booth and recovery system require specialized electrostatic spray equipment and an air supply system, including compressors and dryers.
4. Curing and Finalizing
- After coating, the product is cured in an oven.
Curing Temperature: 180–200°C
Curing Time: 15–20 minutes
- Curing ovens use infrared stoves or burners, powered by gas or electricity.
5. Inspection and Packaging
After curing, the product is cooled, carefully inspected for surface quality, and then packaged.
Defective products are reprocessed and recoated to ensure quality standards are met.
