BLACK SILICON CARBIDE (SiC) ABRASIVE GRAIN
Guided by the principle “Building a renowned brand through quality”, Hai Duong Grinding Wheels Joint Stock Company consistently delivers high-quality products that meet customer demands and uphold consumer trust. This article highlights one of our standout products – the Silicon Carbide (SiC) abrasive grain.
1. What is Silicon Carbide (SiC)?
Silicon Carbide (SiC) is an artificial mineral known for its extreme hardness (Mohs 9.1/2550 Knoop), high thermal conductivity, and excellent strength at elevated temperatures. SiC is significantly stronger than aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), especially at temperatures up to 1000°C, and maintains its strength up to 1600°C. It does not melt at normal atmospheric pressure but decomposes at 2600°C.

3. Structure and Properties of Black Silicon Carbide Abrasive
➟ Crystalline Structure:
Silicon carbide exists in over 250 crystalline forms, with polymorphism being a defining characteristic. These structures are similar to each other in two dimensions but differ in the third. As a result, they can be thought of as layers stacked in a specific order.
➟ Alpha Silicon Carbide (α-SiC):
The most common polymorph, formed at temperatures above 1700°C, featuring a hexagonal crystal structure (similar to Wurtzite).
➟ Beta Silicon Carbide (β-SiC):
This polymorph has a zinc-blende-like structure (similar to diamond) and is formed at temperatures below 1700°C. Recently, beta SiC has gained attention due to its higher surface area, making it useful as a support for heterogeneous catalysts.
4. Advantages of Black Silicon Carbide Abrasive
- High Hardness and Brittleness: Ideal for grinding hard and brittle materials like ceramics and cast metals.
- Superior Grinding Performance: Suitable for precision grinding and polishing of non-ferrous metals, glass, and tough stones.
- Thermal Stability: Maintains excellent performance even under high temperatures.
- Versatility: Can be used in both wet and dry conditions, delivering consistent results across a wide range of applications.
5. Applications of Black Silicon Carbide Abrasive Grain
- Metalworking: Precision grinding of cast iron, copper, brass, and non-ferrous metals.
- Ceramics and Glass Processing: Effective in cutting and grinding ceramics, glass, and hard stones.
- Aerospace and Automotive: For applications requiring high durability and performance in extreme conditions.
With its excellent hardness, thermal stability, and versatility, Black Silicon Carbide remains an essential material in modern abrasive technologies.
