1. General information:
- RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags that support this technology attached to into the object. An RFID system consists of a small transponder, a receiver and a radio transmitter.
- When triggered by an electromagnetic pulse to query data from a nearby RFID reader, the RFID tag responds with numeric data, usually a unique identifier value, to the RFID reader. The return value from this RFID tag can be used to track objects, such as goods, equipment, etc. As an automatic identification method based on data storage of remote devices, RFID is therefore a method of Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC).
2. Classifications:
- There are two types of RFID tags:
- Unlike barcodes, an RFID tag does not need to be within readable range of an RFID tag reader, so it can be attached or embedded on objects to be tracked.
- RFID tags are widely used in industry. For example, in the production of automobiles, an RFID tag mounted on an automobile being assembled can be used to track the entire process on a production line, RFID tags mounted on pharmaceuticals will assist tracking them in stock, and implanting RFID chips on livestock and livestock that aid in animal identification. RFID tags can also be used during store checkouts and prevent shoplifting.
- Since RFID tags can be attached to general physical devices such as property, clothing, banknotes, or implanted on the body of a person or animal, the potential for eavesping information regarding the objects owner tagged with those RFID tags has raised privacy concerns. These concerns led to the development of technical standards for RFID technology related to privacy and security.
- Regarding the frequency range, there are 4 different types of RFID tags:
