Product Description
Sodium Hypochlorite, also known as NaOCl or Javel water, is a chemical widely used as a bleaching agent for clothes. Beyond that, it is commonly applied in wastewater treatment at power plants and paper mills, medical disinfection, deodorization, and especially for swimming pool water sterilization.
What is Sodium Hypochlorite?
Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl), commonly called Javel, is a liquid solution with strong oxidizing properties. It can break down pigments and the biological structures of microorganisms. Therefore, NaOCl 10% is widely used as a bleaching and disinfecting agent in industry, households, and healthcare.
Applications of Sodium Hypochlorite
Daily life: Javel is a popular bleach used to whiten clothes and remove stains. When dissolved in water, it produces hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a weak acid with strong oxidizing ability that breaks down dyes and eliminates odors.
Water disinfection (especially swimming pools): NaOCl reacts with proteins and DNA of bacteria, destroying cell membranes and preventing bacterial growth, keeping pool water clean and safe.
Industrial wastewater treatment: Widely used to eliminate bacteria and sludge, particularly effective in treating cyanide concentrations. The oxidation reaction converts toxic cyanide (CN⁻) into less harmful cyanate (OCN⁻):
Medical field: Sodium Hypochlorite is used as a disinfectant. In dentistry, it is applied to eliminate bacteria in root canals at concentrations from 0.5% to 5.25%. It is also used to prevent and treat skin and tissue infections, especially before and after surgery.
