1. What is SKD61 steel plate?
Steel plate is a type of steel used for hot stamping mold, they are produced according to Japanese JIS standards. SKD61 steel plate is widely and popularly used in the mold manufacturing industry of aluminum, zinc and household products, etc.
► Heat treatment conditions:
The detailed heat treatment conditions of SKD61 steel plate are as follows:
- Hardness after tempering at temperatures from 750 °C to 800 °C: <230 HB.
- Tempering at temperatures from 1020 °C to 1050 °C, cooling in air or oil at a temperature range of 500 °C to 550 °C: 1910N/mm2.
- Hardness after tempering: 54 HRC.
- Hardness after heat treatment at 150 °C - 200 °C: 53 HRC.

3. Features of SKD61 steel plate
Based on its chemical composition, SKD61 steel plate has the following characteristics:
- Carbon – Increases the hardness of the steel. Higher carbon content means higher hardness, but it also reduces ductility and impact toughness.
- Chromium – Limits rusting by creating an oxide film that protects the surface and prevents inner metal oxidation.
- Molybdenum – Enhances wear resistance, strength, ductility, and weldability. It also improves the steels corrosion resistance.
- Vanadium – Forms VC carbide with very high hardness, preventing austenite growth during heating. It also enhances the steels temperature resistance and wear resistance.
- Silicon – Like manganese, dissolved silicon in iron boosts the strength and hardness of steel alloys.
